"We're Going for a Trip Across the Water"

Onto either side of a suspended aluminium screen are projected opposing views of a couple rowing a boat in circles around a lake.  Short fragments from the film Sunrise (F.W.Murneau, 1927) have been digitally reanimated to create this endlessly looping scene.

All vision is at a slight remove here - the cameras show neither the man’s nor the woman’s point of view, but instead reflects their averted gaze by floating ghostlike somewhere just beyond the boat/screen's limits. Likewise the viewer is simultaneously granted and denied access to the installation's opposing viewpoints and must circle the screen to see the whole work.

Floating between physical and illusory existence, the couple in this work mirror the fate of digitally transfered films; caught between a recorded past and an immaterial, ghostly present.
